In celebration of the launch of my new podcast, Fearlessly Playful, I thought I’d dig out this nugget from the archives… it’s where I got my start, learning from one of my radio heroes, CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) Radio’s Nora Young.
Before lolcats were a thing…
A long time ago (2008) in a galaxy far far away (Canada), I did a mini radio doc/explainer piece for CBC Radio’s technology show, Spark, on something that was still pretty novel at the time: internet memes!
The piece centres around my visit to ROFLCon, which was probably the first festival to celebrate memes and internet culture, and features my adventures talking to a bunch of zany early internet celebrities (or what we’d now call influencers), including Tron Guy, Tay Zonday (‘Chocolate Rain‘) and my feminist super hero, Leslie Hall.
It was a time when the internet was a lot more weird, but also more simple. I miss those days.
Listen!
Did you like it?
Get in touch. I’d love to do some more freelance radio/podcasting work this year, and I’ve got a few cracker ideas for stories.
